A tragic maritime accident occurred Thursday night near Pantoukios, Chios, when a boat carrying 29 refugees and migrants collided with rocks along the coastline. The impact killed two women and injured six others, prompting a large-scale rescue operation.
Authorities quickly located and rescued 24 people at the scene. The remaining five individuals, including the two women found unconscious, were trapped in a rocky and difficult-to-access area.
Rescue Efforts
Personnel from the Hellenic Coast Guard and the Fire Department led the rescue operation. Survivors were transported by ambulances from Greece’s National Emergency Center (EKAB) to the Chios Hospital for treatment.
Of the 12 people hospitalized, one was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), while five others remain in surgical and medical wards, including one who underwent emergency surgery. The remaining survivors were taken to the VIAL Reception and Identification Center.Authorities are investigating the circumstances that caused the boat to strike the rocks. Both the Coast Guard and Fire Department participated due to the challenging terrain.
