An inmate-on-inmate murder was reported on Monday at the Korydallos prison southwest of downtown Athens, with authorities reporting that one man, an Albanian national, died as a result of a “shanking”.

The victim was only identified as a 49-year-old Albanian national serving a maximum sentence for homicide and weapons possession. The man had also escaped from custody in June 2015 was only recaptured in December 2024.

The alleged perpetrator is a Greek national on remand and facing homicide charges.

Other reports state that Albanian authorities had requested the victim’s extradition to serve a prison sentence in the neighboring country for homicide and attempted homicide, among others.

The body of the victim was found in his cell at Korydallos’ third wing on Monday afternoon.

The Korydallos facility, located in the same-name municipality near Piraeus, was previously Greece’s biggest penitentiary, but has gradually transitioned into a prison for jailed defendants facing trial.
