Diver’s Body Recovered from Vouliagmeni Cave

A complex rescue operation retrieved the 34-year-old from a dangerous underwater cave system after strong currents trapped him inside.

Authorities have recovered the body of the 34-year-old diver who drowned last Sunday in a hazardous underwater cave near Vouliagmeni, following a challenging operation.

The operation took place at a site commonly referred to as the “Devil’s Well,” a location known for its powerful underwater currents and complex geomorphology.

A specialized team of seven experienced cave divers completed the recovery after approximately 90 minutes, navigating what experts described as extremely demanding conditions.

Rescuers used specialized equipment to access the narrow and turbulent cave system, where continuous water inflow creates intense suction and whirlpool-like conditions.

“It was a very difficult operation due to the terrain and the constant flow of water into the cave,” said one of the divers involved in the mission.

According to information from the rescue team, the late diver appears to have approached the cave entrance too closely during the dive.

He was then pulled inside by the strong currents and became trapped within the cave system.

Divers located his body in a chamber just a few meters from the entrance, after he had passed through a narrow opening where the force of the water creates powerful vortexes.
