A deadly traffic accident in Loutsa, Greece, claimed the life of a 24-year-old man after he and three others were hit by a vehicle driven by a 29-year-old man found to have alcohol in his system. Authorities are awaiting toxicology results to determine whether drugs were also involved.
The tragic collision occurred late Saturday evening, when the driver lost control of his vehicle in a sudden maneuver to avoid another car. Security camera footage obtained by MEGA shows the car veering into a parked vehicle before striking the group of pedestrians on the sidewalk.
Eyewitnesses describe scenes of chaos: the 24-year-old victim was killed instantly, while his 21-year-old girlfriend, his 22-year-old sister, and his 57-year-old mother were severely injured. The girlfriend underwent surgery at KAT Hospital and is now stable. A rescue worker recounted the driver’s shocking behavior immediately after the crash: “The police were telling him he had caused a death, and he kept looking at the car to see what damage it had,” he said. “He didn’t seem to grasp what had happened.”
Neighbors rushed to assist, providing blankets and comforting the victims. The 24-year-old had just returned from Belgium to attend his girlfriend’s graduation ceremony, making the loss even more poignant. His mother was reportedly in a state of shock.
The victim came from a prominent Greek chocolate-making family. He worked in the family business’s Belgian branch, continuing the legacy of his great-grandfather, Leonidas Kestekides, who established a global confectionery empire over 112 years ago. According to family sources, “He wanted to be part of this family tradition. He studied abroad, did his master’s in London, and was already contributing to the business in Belgium. Everyone loved him.”
The driver, a member of a business family himself, reportedly showed little emotional reaction at the scene. His mother told Greek media: “I am very sorry, but I cannot speak to anyone. I am deeply upset.”
