Greek authorities have seized more than 130 kilograms of cannabis with an estimated street value exceeding €900,000 after intercepting a truck at the Port of Patras, dealing a major blow to an organized drug trafficking ring.
According to officials, the haul included 110 kilograms of raw cannabis and 21 kilograms of processed hashish. The drugs were discovered during a coordinated operation carried out by port authorities in Patras and law enforcement teams in Athens.
The investigation began after authorities received intelligence that a specific truck would be transporting a large quantity of illegal drugs. When the vehicle disembarked from a ferry operating the short route between Antirrio and Rio, officers stopped it for inspection. With the assistance of sniffer dogs, they located the drugs carefully concealed inside packaging designed to resemble hydroponic cannabis products.
The operation did not end at the port. Authorities expanded the investigation to Athens, raiding a warehouse in the Ambelokipi district where the shipment was allegedly destined before being distributed across central Athens.
During the search of the warehouse, officers found labels from Greek and Spanish companies, which investigators believe were intended to be placed on the packages to help the traffickers avoid random inspections.
Two suspects, aged 35 and 61, have been arrested in connection with the case. Authorities say the investigation remains ongoing, as they work to identify additional members of the network and trace the full scope of the trafficking operation.
The seizure highlights continued efforts by Greek authorities to combat large-scale drug smuggling through major transport hubs and ports.
