Some 9,000 breathalyzer tests were conducted in the greater Athens area overnight, Christmas Eve, as part of a recent crackdown on drunk driving, especially in the Greek capital, where roughly half of the country’s population resides.
The crackdown, at least based on recent reports, appears to have generated positive results.
For instance, of approximately 2,000 breathalyzer tests administered to drivers at a police roadblock in Athens’ historic center (Aiolou St.) between midnight and 5 a.m., only eight drivers tested above the legal limit for alcohol consumption.
Of those eight, in fact, most were detected in the lowest level of legally defined inebriation, namely, between 0.24 and 0.40, based on Greece’s traffic code.
A similar roadblock in the northern city of Thessaloniki yielded only five DUI violations.
