The Attica Region has ordered the immediate closure of an elderly care facility in the Kypseli neighborhood following a surprise inspection that revealed severe violations and neglect.
Officials from the Regional Social Services conducted the assessment on November 13, uncovering alarming conditions throughout the facility. Inspectors reported widespread disrepair, strong odors, dirty bedding, unhygienic bathrooms, and poorly maintained common areas. Residents were reportedly left without assistance for hours, with no support for personal hygiene, medication administration, or meals due to staff shortages.
Staff present at the time of inspection claimed they were acting on personal initiative, unsure of their pay or whether subsequent shifts would arrive. Investigators also noted significant lapses in professional oversight, incomplete medical records, resignations of key nursing personnel, and the absence of the facility’s designated care supervisor.
The situation represents a marked deterioration compared to previous inspections, posing an immediate risk to the health and dignity of residents.
Regional Governor Nikos Hardalias described the findings as “outrageous,” instructing the responsible authorities to ensure the safe transfer of residents to licensed care facilities. He emphasized that the Attica Region will not tolerate any facility that neglects, mistreats, or endangers the elderly.
“The elderly deserve dignified conditions, adequate care, and absolute safety. Nothing less,” Hardalias stated. “The suspension of operations was the minimum obligation to the residents and their families. Inspections will continue with increased rigor, and violations will be met with immediate sanctions.”
