Engine Failure Leaves Greek Ferry with 183 Passengers Partially Disabled

The Ionis is sailing to Lavrio on one engine after a blackout left it temporarily adrift; tugboats and the coast guard are on standby

A passenger and vehicle ferry carrying 183 people suffered an engine blackout on Tuesday afternoon, leaving it partially disabled in the Aegean Sea, according to the Hellenic Coast Guard.

The Ionis, which also has a crew of 25, experienced a power failure while sailing between the islands of Kea and Makronisos. The incident temporarily left the vessel adrift before engineers managed to partially restore power, enabling it to operate on one engine.

The ferry is now making its way under its own power toward the port of Lavrio, southeast of Athens. Authorities say it is expected to reach the entrance of the harbour soon, where a tugboat will be waiting to assist if necessary.

Another tugboat already in the area has been dispatched by Greece’s Joint Rescue Coordination Center to escort the vessel. A coast guard ship is also nearby to provide support.

No injuries or further complications have been reported.

The cause of the blackout has not yet been disclosed, and the ferry’s condition will be assessed upon arrival in Lavrio.
