A Greek-flagged open-deck passenger and vehicle ferry sank in waters about one nautical mile east of Sifnos on September 2. The vessel, named “EIRINI K,” went down after taking on water on Wednesday morning.
According to the Hellenic Coast Guard, the vessel was being towed from the island of Kalymnos to Perama when the incident occurred. Its two crew members were rescued by the tugboat and are both in good health.
According to a statement from the vessel’s owner, the ship was not carrying fuel or lubricants, reducing the risk of marine pollution from the incident.
A Coast Guard patrol vessel and an anti-pollution vessel are heading to the area. Northerly winds of 4 to 5 Beaufort are prevailing at the site.
