Fierce Waves Batter Gavdos Island, Boats and Cars Damaged

Strong winds and heavy seas have created dangerous conditions on Gavdos, overturning boats, damaging vehicles, and threatening residents and migrants living on the small Greek island

Gavdos, Greece’s southernmost inhabited island, is facing severe weather as powerful winds and waves sweep across the area, causing significant damage and disruption.

Video footage shows the extreme force of the sea as a 15-meter sailboat, secured at the island’s harbor, is tossed violently by towering waves. Authorities report that the intense winds have also put Frontex personnel and their vessel at risk.

Damage to Boats and Vehicles

Several boats have capsized, and at least one car was swept away by the waves. Earlier reports indicated that a migrant boat was carried dangerously close to residential buildings, stopping just one meter from a small housing unit used by migrants.

The mayor of Gavdos highlighted the challenges faced by the roughly 30 migrants currently residing on the island in cramped two-room accommodations. Local residents, numbering around 60, are helping provide meals, but conditions remain difficult.

Impact on Local Life

Supply routes to the island have been disrupted, as no ships are currently arriving. Fishermen are struggling to recover boats and repair damage caused by the storm. The mayor emphasized the need for better infrastructure and support to aid residents, the municipal administration, and the migrant population during periods of isolation caused by extreme weather.
