Α manhunt was underway in south-central Athens on Thursday evening into the early morning hours of Friday after fleeing burglars ran over two police motorcycles during a getaway. Three police officers were slightly injured at the scene.
The incident unfolded shortly after 8 p.m., when a resident reported an ongoing break-in at a nearby home.
Officers from the motorcycle unit arrived within minutes and spotted the suspects leaving the property. The burglars jumped into a car, ignored police orders to stop and accelerated toward the officers, striking two of their motorbikes and causing minor injuries to the riders. Police fired at the car’s tyres in an attempt to halt the vehicle, but the suspects managed to flee. Their abandoned car was later located in the neighbouring area of Dafni.
Panic Among Residents
Residents described scenes of confusion and fear as sirens, shots and screeching tyres broke the evening calm. A woman walking with her two children said they ran for cover as gunshots sounded “right next to us,” leaving the children deeply shaken. Other witnesses reported hearing multiple shots and seeing the police motorbikes lying on the ground.
Local authorities expressed concern that the situation could have resulted in casualties. The mayor of Agios Dimitrios noted that the suspects even drove the wrong way down a major avenue during their escape, calling the incident a sign of rising criminal activity and stressing the need for stronger police presence.
Inside the Burgled Home
The son of the homeowner said he rushed to the scene after receiving a phone call about the break-in. According to him, the burglars entered through the kitchen after breaking part of the door. A neighbour reportedly spotted them, triggering the swift police response.
Inside, the family found drawers emptied and wardrobes overturned, though larger valuables appeared untouched. The family has filed a formal complaint and officers are examining the home for fingerprints.
Residents told reporters that attempted burglaries and other criminal incidents have increased in the area, heightening fears about public safety. “We could have had victims,” one eyewitness said, echoing a sentiment shared by several locals.
