Floods, Power Outages on Greek Islands as Storms Rage On

Torrential rain, a reported tornado, and gale-force winds hit Greek islands, causing flooding, damage, and blackouts as authorities warn of more extreme weather.

Severe weather swept across parts of Greece on Wednesday, bringing heavy rain, flooding, power outages, and a reported tornado, as authorities kept a nationwide emergency weather bulletin in effect.

The island of Corfu was at the center of the storm system, particularly its northern areas, where large volumes of rain flooded roads and disrupted daily life. In the village of Afionas, a tornado reportedly caused damage to at least five businesses, tearing off awnings and wooden pergolas and damaging house roofs.

Fire service crews and local civil protection teams rushed to the area to remove debris and clear the road network. Officials urged residents to limit travel due to dangerous conditions, including fallen branches and low visibility.

Power outages and local damage
Power cuts were reported in multiple parts of Corfu. Significant network damage affected areas including Alykes, Kontokali, and Gouvia, where specialized repair crews were deployed. In the village of Kavadades, a fallen tree on power lines triggered outages across the wider area.

Similar incidents were reported in southern Corfu, where strong winds toppled trees in the villages of Kavos and Perivoli, disrupting electricity supply.

Flooding beyond Corfu
Heavy rainfall also hit the island of Kefalonia, where floodwaters turned the coastal road in the main town into a river, making vehicle movement extremely difficult.

Emergency weather bulletin in force
Greece’s national meteorological service kept an emergency weather warning in effect for Thursday, forecasting intense weather across western Greece, northeastern mainland regions, and parts of the eastern Aegean islands. Localized hail was also possible.

Very strong south to southeast winds of up to 8 or locally 9 Beaufort were expected in the eastern Aegean from morning through the afternoon.

Forecasters predicted periods of heavy rain and thunderstorms in the Ionian Islands, western mainland areas, the Peloponnese, eastern Macedonia and Thrace, and several Aegean island groups through Thursday and into early Friday.

Rain and dust in Athens
Rainfall was also expected in the wider Athens region, with storms mainly forecast for midday and afternoon hours. Meteorologists noted that African dust transport is affecting conditions, with rainfall classified as significant and including episodes of “mud rain,” where dust mixes with precipitation.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation and advise the public to remain cautious as the severe weather moves across the country.
