Greece is set to launch applications for its “Neighborhood Nannies” childcare program on April 24, introducing a nationwide system designed to support families with infants and toddlers while helping parents, particularly mothers, return to work or continue their studies.
The initiative provides monthly financial assistance of up to €500 per child, depending on the level of care required and household eligibility criteria.
Financial support for childcare
Under the program, mothers may receive €500 per month for full-time childcare or €300 for part-time care arrangements. Eligibility is primarily based on the mother’s individual income, with thresholds set at up to €24,000 for one child and €27,000 for two children. Families with three or more children are not subject to income limits.
The scheme is aimed at supporting working mothers, self-employed women, unemployed mothers, and students with children.
Expanded eligibility and social support
Officials have highlighted that the program has been designed with broader social inclusion in mind, including for the first time special provisions for student mothers. The aim is to reduce barriers that childcare responsibilities can create in relation to employment and education.
Authorities say the initiative is intended to offer a reliable childcare solution while easing pressure on families during early childhood years.
Requirements for caregivers
The program also introduces certified neighborhood caregivers who will provide childcare services. Those wishing to participate must meet specific requirements, including a minimum compulsory education certificate, completion of an online training seminar, first aid certification, a health certificate, and a clean criminal record excluding certain offences.
These measures are intended to ensure safety and reliability in childcare provision.
Policy goals
Officials describe the program as part of a wider effort to strengthen family support structures and improve work-life balance. The policy aims to create a more flexible childcare system that allows parents to remain active in the workforce or continue their education without being forced to choose between professional development and childcare responsibilities.
