A tense incident took place near the small Greek island of Aghathonisi, where Greek authorities reported a confrontation involving Turkish fishing boats and vessels from the Turkish Coast Guard. According to information from Greece’s Coast Guard headquarters, the episode occurred late on Tuesday, 18 November, when two Turkish fishing vessels entered Greek territorial waters and began fishing in the area. Two Turkish Coast Guard boats were also present.
Three Greek patrol vessels approached to identify the fishing boats and issued multiple visual and audible warnings, ordering them to leave. However, the Turkish vessels reportedly ignored the instructions, and one of them carried out dangerous maneuvers that nearly caused a collision with a Greek patrol boat.
Following the escalation, the crew of the Greek vessel fired warning shots in accordance with established engagement procedures. The Turkish fishing boats and accompanying Coast Guard vessels subsequently withdrew from the area.
The event adds to a series of recent maritime tensions, underscoring the sensitive nature of activity in the waters surrounding Aghathonisi.
