Greek Farmers Threaten Summer Protests Over Delayed Subsidy Payments

Farmers in the Thessaloniki region are preparing to launch protest actions amid the peak summer season, citing prolonged delays in subsidy payments from the Greek Payment and Control Agency for Guidance and Guarantee Community Aid (OPEKEPE).

A key meeting is set to take place today, Monday, August 4, in Thermi, where farmers from Eastern Thessaloniki will decide on their next steps. Among the actions being considered is a possible blockade of the Thessaloniki–Moudania national road, a move that could significantly disrupt travel during Greece’s busy tourism period.

Farmers say they have reached a breaking point. Despite repeatedly requesting information about when they can expect their payments, they claim they have received no response from authorities. Rising costs for fertilizers, electricity, and labor have only worsened their financial strain.
