Greek Global Sumud Flotilla Activists To Return to Athens

Members of the Greek mission are expected to arrive in Athens on Friday evening after being detained by Israeli forces, with organizers alleging mistreatment during their custody

Members of the Greek delegation of the Global Sumud Flotilla are expected to return to Athens on Friday evening following their detention by Israeli forces in international waters off Cyprus and their subsequent custody in Israel.

According to an announcement by the activist group March to Gaza, the delegation is scheduled to arrive at Athens International Airport at 8:00p.m. local time. Supporters have been called to gather at the airport half an hour earlier to welcome the returning activists.

The organization stated that, following pressure and mobilization efforts, procedures for the activists’ repatriation were completed and the group was cleared to return to Greece.

Allegations of Mistreatment in Custody

Members of the mission have alleged that they were subjected to mistreatment and violence during their detention.

According to statements cited by March to Gaza, several detainees were reportedly found with bruises, abrasions and other injuries. The group also claimed that one member may have suffered a leg fracture.

After their release from custody in Israel, the activists traveled to Istanbul, where an initial assessment of their condition was conducted. Organizers said multiple incidents of violence were reported by members of the delegation.

Criticism of Government Response

March to Gaza also criticized the Greek government, accusing it of remaining silent regarding the treatment of Greek citizens during the incident.

In its statement, the organization argued that the authorities had not publicly addressed allegations that members of the mission were detained and assaulted while in Israeli custody.

Call for Continued Solidarity

Despite the ordeal, organizers said the activists were returning with high morale and valuable experience from the mission.

March to Gaza emphasized the importance of international solidarity initiatives and said support for such actions had been expressed by numerous social organizations and residents of Gaza.
