Greek music legend Dionysis Savvopoulos will be laid to rest in a public funeral on Saturday, October 25, at the First Cemetery of Athens. The announcement follows a Joint Ministerial Decision signed by four government officials, reflecting his profound impact on Greek culture.
Savvopoulos, widely regarded as one of Greece’s most influential songwriters, passed away on the evening of Tuesday, October 21, 2025, at 9:10 p.m. In recent weeks, he had been receiving treatment in a private hospital’s cardiology department while courageously battling cancer over the past years.
The Joint Ministerial Decision authorizing the state-funded funeral was signed by the Ministers of National Economy and Finance Kyriakos Pierrakakis, Interior Thodoris Livanios, Culture Lina Mendoni, and Deputy Minister of National Economy and Finance Thanos Petralias.
For six decades, Savvopoulos left an indelible mark on Greek music, combining poetic lyrics, innovative melodies, and a commanding stage presence that inspired generations. His death marks the end of an era, but his music and legacy will continue to resonate in Greece and beyond.
