Greek Teacher Arrested After Gagging Student With Tape

A 60-year-old middle school teacher and principal in northern Greece has been arrested and convicted after allegedly gagging a 13-year-old student with tape during class, prompting a criminal investigation and disciplinary action by education authorities.

According to reports, the incident took place at a middle school in the city of Serres, where the 60-year-old teacher allegedly placed insulating tape over the student’s mouth because he was being disruptive in class. She is also accused of instructing another student to bind the boy’s hands with paper tape.

The child did not resist, reportedly acting out of fear. He remained restrained for the duration of a full class period until another teacher later intervened and removed the tape.

Complaint Filed by Family

After returning home, the student described the incident to his mother, who immediately reported it to local police. Authorities arrested the teacher shortly afterward, and a criminal case was forwarded to the public prosecutor in Serres.

The charges include unlawful coercion and bodily harm. The teacher was convicted under expedited court proceedings and sentenced to 24 months in prison, a term that is convertible to a daily fine. She has filed an appeal and was released pending further legal proceedings.

During her testimony, the teacher admitted placing tape over the student’s mouth but claimed that she had left the classroom and returned to find the boy’s hands already tied.

Allegations of Prior Concerning Behavior

According to reports citing sources within the school community, the incident may not have been isolated. The teacher had previously drawn complaints from parents and staff over troubling behavior, and an internal investigation had already been launched before the classroom incident.

These concerns intensified following the alleged gagging, which took place during the first teaching hour of the day.

Mother Describes Threats and Psychological Impact

In media interviews, the boy’s mother described the incident in detail, alleging that the teacher threatened her son during recess, repeatedly telling him, “I will turn you into a mummy,” and later warning him she would bind him more tightly.

She said the child is experiencing anxiety and emotional distress but is receiving family support. “Children are supposed to be safe at school,” she said, adding that her son now understands that such treatment is unacceptable and that he has the right to seek protection through the justice system.

Education Ministry Orders Investigation

Greece’s Ministry of Education confirmed that the teacher has been placed on administrative leave. An official disciplinary inquiry has also been ordered, independent of the court ruling, to fully examine the circumstances of the incident and determine whether similar cases occurred in the past.

The ministry said the investigation aims to safeguard the school community and ensure compliance with regulations governing the conduct of educators.

The case has fueled broader debate in Greece over oversight in schools and the protection of minors within the education system.
