Greek Woman Dies Nine Months After Brutal Beating by Husband

The 53-year-old from Karystos succumbed to her injuries after months in hospital, following years of abuse and neglect at the hands of her husband

A 53-year-old woman from Karystos, Evia, has died after spending nine months in hospital recovering from a brutal beating inflicted by her husband. She had been receiving treatment at Evangelismos Hospital in Athens, where she ultimately succumbed to her injuries.

According to reports, the victim, identified as Georgia, had endured years of physical and psychological abuse, living in deplorable conditions with her husband in a makeshift shelter without electricity or running water.

Relatives described a life of constant terror. Her niece told Greek media that Georgia “was insulted, exploited and beaten with anything he could find. She lived in fear and agony every single day. There is no punishment severe enough for such criminals.”

Her cousin also recounted the woman’s own words: “He hit me with an iron wherever he could. It wasn’t the first time he did it.”

From Attempted Murder to Homicide

The 65-year-old husband initially claimed that his wife had been injured accidentally while working outdoors. However, an anonymous tip-off alerted authorities to his violent history, leading to his arrest and pre-trial detention.

He was charged with attempted murder with intent, a charge that is now expected to be upgraded to homicide following the woman’s death.
