The ongoing heatwave gripping Greece has prompted a new temporary suspension of outdoor work in the private sector from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. today, Wednesday, July 9, according to a directive issued by the Ministry of Labour.
The measure applies to specific regions experiencing extreme temperatures, including Attica, Thessaloniki, Serres, Halkidiki, Magnesia, Phthiotis, Viotia, Evia, Argolis, Laconia, as well as Chania and Rethymno on Crete, Samos, and Chios. Also affected are eastern Lesvos, eastern Rhodes, and lowland areas of Evros and Soufli.
Scope of the Ban
The work stoppage specifically targets outdoor manual labor, including construction and technical works, shipbuilding and repair zones, as well as distribution and delivery activities involving bicycles, scooters, or rollerblades. This includes delivery workers operating through both physical businesses and digital platforms.
Impact on Delivery Services
If the delivery ban is enforced, it applies across the board — to all businesses offering delivery services, regardless of whether they operate through a storefront or an online platform. However, customers may still be allowed to place orders for takeaway pickup, and deliveries can continue using air-conditioned private or public vehicles that do not fall under the category of two-wheeled vehicles or mopeds, as defined by the national road traffic code.
Exemptions
Certain sectors are exempt from the suspension due to their critical role in public welfare. These include essential infrastructure in healthcare, water supply, electricity, and all modes of transportation — air, sea, land, and rail.
Businesses that fail to comply with the directive face fines of 2,000 euros per affected employee.
Remote Work for Vulnerable Groups
Employers are also urged to implement remote work options for employees who belong to high-risk health categories, as long as the nature of their job allows it.
