Jail Sentences Handed Down to 30 Foreign Nationals For ‘Hotspot’ Riot

The defendants received sentences of up to three years and were set to be transferred to correctional facilities

A first instance court in the northern city of Serres on Friday handed down jail sentences against 30 foreign nationals found guilty of rioting and, in some instances, incitement to commit violence against state officials, in relation to a serious disturbance and clashes at a closed “hotspot” hosting asylum-seekers.

The incidents, which required an intervention by police, took place on Wednesday at the facility, located at the Kleidi site in the Serres municipality.

The defendants included 29 Egyptians and a Bangladeshi, all identified as young adult men.

After the verdict, all 30 were held at a local police precinct pending transport to correctional facilities to serve prison sentences, ranging from a maximum three to three and a half years.
