Greek authorities arrested a 66-year-old fugitive in Lamia on Monday, August 31, who had outstanding prison sentences totaling 120 years for multiple financial offenses.
The man was located in the city following a coordinated operation by officers from Lamia and the Charilaou–Analipsi Crime Investigation Department in Thessaloniki.
According to LamiaReport, the man, who is originally from the Pieria region of northern Greece, had previously fled abroad after receiving serious convictions for financial crimes in Thessaloniki.
Fugitive had fled to Panama
The 66-year-old was eventually located in Panama and extradited to Greek authorities. He initially appeared willing to resolve his outstanding legal matters but disappeared again when he had the opportunity.
To conceal his whereabouts, he changed his name and identity documents before settling in Lamia, where he remained undetected for an extended period.
Dozens of court decisions
The authorities had a substantial number of judicial documents outstanding against the man.
These included four orders issued by the President of the Thessaloniki Court of Appeals, six arrest warrants and 24 convictions handed down by various courts in Thessaloniki and by Greece’s Supreme Civil and Criminal Court, known as the Areios Pagos.
The offenses involved fraud, forgery, tax evasion and violations of legislation protecting public revenues.
The combined prison and custodial sentences imposed on him totaled 120 years.
Following his arrest, the man was taken before the competent prosecutorial and judicial authorities for the immediate enforcement of the convictions and his incarceration in a correctional facility.
