Latest Wolf Sighting Beneath Athens’ Mt. Parnitha (Vid)

On the one hand, the sighting points to an auspicious return of the once endangered predator in southern Greece, while on the other hand, the presence of wolves in residential areas raises public safety concerns

After wild boars, feral pigs and foxes, a sighting of a wolf in an outlying district beneath Mt. Parnitha (Parnes) – Thrakomakedones – overlooking the greater Athens-Piraeus area from the northwest, is shown in a latest video circulating Greek-language social media.

The video shows a young adult wolf casually pacing along a residential road in the foothills district at night.

The incident was recorded on the evening of Friday, March 20, at around 22:30, when passersby spotted the wild animal and recorded the moment with a cell phone and posted it on the FB page “Kokkino Elafi Parnithas SOS – Parnes Red Deer.”

On the one hand, the sighting points to an auspicious return of the once endangered predator in southern Greece, while on the other hand, the presence of wolves in residential areas raises public safety concerns, i.e. in proximity to young children, small pets and domesticated animals, etc.

Similar incidents have been recorded from time to time in the past.

Conservation groups have repeatedly reminded the public that in the event of spotting a wild animal, people should remain calm, avoid approaching it and notify relevant authorities if necessary, in order to ensure the safety of both residents and the animal.
