A major wildfire erupted in central Evia Island on Tuesday afternoon near a PPC power plant, generating a significant response by the fire brigade and local municipalities.
The blaze was located in the Milaki site, between the settlement of Taminea and the town of Kymi.
The wildfire was burning brushland and olive trees in the afternoon.
The specific area in south-central Evia, a large island that lies off the Greek mainland’s eastern seaboard, has in the past been scorched by wildfires.
In an unrelated incident, a wildfire was reported after midnight on Tuesday on a slope of Mt. Parnitha, which overlooks the greater Athens area from the northwest. The blaze was quickly extinguished by a strong fire-fighting force before spreading to forested areas.
