A search and rescue operation has been completed in Tryfos Gorge, near Vonitsa in Aetolia-Acarnania, western Greece, where a 40-year-old man was pulled out unconscious, while another man was safely rescued from the difficult and inaccessible terrain.
According to the Fire Service, on Wednesday night (July 1), the Operations Center was alerted following a call to the emergency number 112 about two men who were stranded in a hard-to-reach area inside the gorge. Their location was immediately identified through geolocation, and strong rescue forces were deployed to the scene.
A total of 18 firefighters participated in the operation, along with the Water Rescue Team and the Mountain Search and Rescue Unit of the 6th Special Disaster Response Unit (6th EMAK), a team from the 6th Firefighting and Emergency Response Unit (6th EMODE), as well as a drone unit from the Region of Western Greece.
After a lengthy and highly demanding operation, rescuers managed in the early hours of Thursday to free one of the men alive. They then reached the 40-year-old, who was located unconscious. Using specialized mountaineering equipment, they recovered him and transported him to an accessible point, where an ambulance from the National Emergency Aid Centre (EKAB) took over.
The operation was completed in the morning hours of Thursday (July 2), while further details regarding the circumstances of the incident have not yet been released.
