The old Poseidonos Avenue is reopening to traffic Monday, Aug. 10, ending a period of disruption for drivers in Kallithea and Moschato, southern Athens.
The section between Thiseos Avenue and Kapodistriou Street had been temporarily closed to traffic to allow work to regulate the Ilissos River channel as part of efforts to strengthen flood protection in the area.

Road and bridge works completed
The reopening follows the completion of construction on the new Ilissos road bridge, as well as a parallel bridge carrying utility networks.
The road is expected to return to full operation by midday Monday, once final cleanup work is completed.
According to the Municipality of Kallithea, the reopening means that all temporary traffic restrictions will be lifted.
Traffic lights on the old coastal road at the Ilissos crossing will also return to full operation.

Flood protection project
The municipality described the project as a key flood protection initiative carried out as part of the Ilissos River regulation works.
According to the municipality, the project is intended to provide long-term protection for the area while addressing longstanding issues involving safety, water drainage and accessibility.
The construction work inevitably caused disruption to residents’ daily lives and to drivers traveling through the area.
However, the municipality said the project was essential to strengthening the city’s protection and will now provide “modern, safe and functional infrastructure for everyone.”
