Attica has completed the installation of 388 red-light enforcement cameras at key intersections across the metropolitan area, marking one of the region’s largest road safety initiatives in recent years.

Regional authorities said the cameras have been installed at locations identified by the Attica Traffic Police as high-risk junctions with a history of accidents caused by drivers running red lights.

The €13.38 million project, excluding VAT, was funded through Greece’s Recovery and Resilience Facility under the Road Safety Improvement Program.

Cameras Ready for Full Operation

The cameras operate around the clock and are designed exclusively to detect red-light violations.

Each recorded offence generates a package of evidence for the Hellenic Police, including six high-resolution photographs and a video recording, with officials saying the system is designed to ensure reliable and transparent enforcement. Authorities added that privacy safeguards have been built into the system so that vehicle occupants cannot be identified in the images.

Attica Region is now working with the Ministry of Digital Governance and the Hellenic Police to integrate the cameras into the national traffic enforcement system before they become fully operational.

Part of a Wider Road Safety Strategy

Attica Regional Governor Nikos Hardalias said the project is intended to prevent accidents rather than generate revenue.

He described red-light violations as one of the most dangerous road offences, saying they can cost lives in a matter of seconds, and called on the relevant government authorities to complete the remaining administrative procedures needed for the system to begin operating.

The camera network is part of a broader road safety program worth €192.9 million, comprising 31 projects across the Attica region. According to regional authorities, 58% of those projects have already been launched, completed or put out to tender.

The wider program also includes the installation of 101 upgraded pedestrian crossings at high-risk locations, 1,362 LED lighting units in 31 road underpasses, and upcoming resurfacing and safety improvements on three major roads in Attica.

Officials said the overall objective is to reduce road accidents and improve safety for motorists, pedestrians and cyclists throughout the region.
