Patmos’ Water, Sewage Problems Raise Eyebrows

Environmental inspectors with the South Aegean Regional Government reportedly identified several violations during an on-the-sport inspection

The issue of water quality and management on the well-known island of Patmos generated local and even international headlines this week, as reports, photos and even video from the Dodecanese Isle showed an out-of-order sewage treatment plant and wastewater runoff into the sea, as well as brownish water running from faucets.

Environmental inspectors with the South Aegean Regional Government reportedly identified several violations during an on-the-sport inspection, following negative media reports and a cascade of social media posts.

Separately, a preliminary investigation was ordered by a relevant prosecutor.

The initial inspection was particularly critical, according to reports, of the sewage treatment center.

Patmos is an iconic island in the eastern Aegean linked with St. John the Divine (John of Patmos), as it served as the Apostle’s place of exile and where he authored the Book of Revelation.

Today, it attracts tens of thousands of visitors and pilgrims every year and is also considered a cosmopolitan destination.
