Piraeus Turns City Center into Open Classroom on Road Safety

Under the theme “Mobility for All,” the initiative focused particularly on teenagers and adults, emphasizing safe, accessible, and sustainable transportation in urban settings.

The Municipality of Piraeus, in response to the alarming increase in traffic accidents across Greece, placed road safety at the center of public attention last Wednesday. Korai Square was turned into an interactive open-air venue, where citizens were invited to engage in experiential activities designed to highlight the importance of safe driving and responsible behavior on the roads.

Under the theme “Mobility for All,” the initiative focused particularly on teenagers and adults, emphasizing safe, accessible, and sustainable transportation in urban settings. Attendees engaged with advanced simulation equipment that recreated the consequences of dangerous driving behaviors, including speeding, driving under the influence, neglecting seatbelts or helmets, and using mobile phones behind the wheel.

The presence of municipal officials highlighted the importance of prevention, while the active involvement of high school students underscored the value of early education in reducing road accidents. The strong public response confirmed the community’s need for continued awareness efforts.

By turning a busy city square into a space for interactive education, the initiative left a clear message: road safety is not just a matter of individual behavior but a shared responsibility essential to creating a safer, more humane, and sustainable city.
