A 31-year-old pregnant woman was found dead with head injuries inside her apartment in central Athens, prompting a homicide investigation and the arrest of her partner.
The woman, who was about five months pregnant, was discovered on Saturday afternoon inside the building where she lived with her 38-year-old partner. He initially called emergency services, claiming he found her unconscious on the stairs.
However, early forensic findings appear to contradict that account. According to investigators, the victim bore multiple injuries, with only one consistent with a fall. The remaining wounds raised suspicions that her death may not have been accidental.
The 38-year-old man, who works as a delivery driver, was initially brought in for questioning and later arrested. He is expected to appear before a prosecutor on Monday.
Conflicting accounts and witness testimony
Authorities are examining differing versions of events provided by the suspect. In statements to police, he said the woman had fallen on the stairs. However, according to neighbors, he gave a different explanation at the scene, claiming she had fainted in the bathroom and hit her head.
Witnesses also reported hearing a violent argument shortly before the incident. One neighbor described hearing a woman screaming, followed by a man shouting and loud commotion, before everything went silent.
Residents told local media that arguments had been heard from the apartment in the past, although no prior incidents had been officially reported to authorities.
Investigation focuses on cause of death
Investigators are now exploring multiple scenarios, including whether the woman was assaulted and later placed on the stairs to resemble an accident, or whether she was injured during a confrontation and subsequently fell.
A full autopsy is expected to clarify the exact cause of death and play a key role in determining the legal course of the case.
The victim, described by a family friend as a quiet and independent person, had recently lost her mother.
