Search Ongoing for Diver Trapped in Underwater Cave

: Rescue teams race against time after a 34-year-old diver became trapped in a dangerous underwater shaft known for strong currents and a history of fatal accidents.

Rescue efforts are ongoing in Vouliagmeni after a 34-year-old diver went missing inside a hazardous underwater cave system, raising concerns about his chances of survival.

The incident occurred on Sunday when the experienced diver was reportedly pulled by strong sea currents into a submerged cave known among divers as the “Devil’s Well.” He had been diving with a friend, who managed to surface and alert authorities.

Challenging Rescue Operation

Coast guard units and specialized rescue divers have been deployed to the area, carrying out multiple dive attempts. However, the operation has so far yielded no results, with conditions described as extremely difficult due to the complex underwater terrain and powerful currents.

Efforts remain underway as teams continue to search the cave system.

A Notoriously Dangerous Dive Site

The “Devil’s Well” is a narrow, vertical underwater shaft located close to the shoreline. It begins at a depth of around 11 meters and extends down to approximately 30 meters.

With a diameter of about three meters, the shaft features strong currents, particularly at mid-depth, which can pull divers downward into a tight underwater tunnel. This passage leads to a larger cave system of unknown size, only partially explored. Experts believe it may connect to a nearby lake.

History of Fatal Incidents

The site has been linked to deadly incidents in the past. In 1978, three young American divers disappeared while attempting to explore the same underwater tunnel. Despite multiple search missions over the years, only limited personal items were recovered, and their remains were identified decades later.

Due to the extreme risks, authorities installed protective barriers in the 1980s to restrict access to the most dangerous parts of the cave. Warning signs remain in place, emphasizing the life-threatening nature of the dive.
