Severe Storms Split Roads, Set Rainfall Record in Corfu

Heavy storms have caused widespread flooding, landslides, and road collapses across western and northern Greece, including record rainfall in Corfu, prompting emergency closures and safety warnings for residents and travelers

Greece is facing severe weather across multiple regions, with unprecedented rainfall, flooding, and landslides affecting western and northern parts of the country. Authorities have issued warnings as roads and infrastructure sustain serious damage.

Corfu Records Half-Century Rainfall

In Corfu, rainfall has reached its highest level in fifty years, causing severe disruptions. A coastal road in the village of Arilla has been split in two, isolating businesses and tourist accommodations. Officials report that continuous heavy rainfall has destabilized slopes, with rocks and soil falling even during light rain. The estimated rainfall equates to roughly 2,300 tons per hectare, overwhelming local infrastructure and straining municipal repair capacities.

Widespread Flooding in Northern Greece

Northern regions, including Thessaloniki, have experienced extensive flooding. From the city’s concert hall to the Kalamaria district, water levels have reached up to 40 centimeters in some businesses, with owners forced to manually remove floodwater. In Sykeon, a balcony collapsed, raising fears of a potential landslide that could impact the entire hillside.

Nearby Pieria has also suffered, with floodwaters inundating shops along the Olympic Coast in Katerini. In Alexandroupoli, storm surges and high winds forced the closure of the coastal Makris-Mesimvria road, while residents of Samothraki experienced power outages due to fallen trees.

Landslides and Road Damage in Epirus

The region of Epirus has faced multiple landslides. In the village of Myrsini, almost all access roads were cut off, and a hillside collapse crushed a summer residence. In Parga, vehicles were trapped under falling rocks, and damage was reported in Agia, Anthousa, and Mytikas. On the Pramanta–Ioannina provincial road near Tzoumerka, the road literally split in two, with one driver narrowly escaping injury. Authorities have rerouted traffic via Agnanta, advising drivers to exercise extreme caution.

Other Affected Areas

The islands of Chios, Lesbos, and Limnos have also experienced severe weather. In Chios, a road near the harbor’s waterfront was damaged by waves, causing traffic jams. Limnos saw coastal road collapses in Agios Ioannis Kaspakas and flooding on the isthmus connecting the Fakos peninsula to the main island. Strong winds in Rhodes caused minor damage, including fallen trees and branches, with certain coastal roads temporarily closed. Residents of Serifos received a 112 alert urging them to limit travel along coastal areas due to ongoing storms.
