Six Suspects Identified for ATM Explosions in Northern Greece

Police say the group is linked to at least 11 ATM blasts in Thessaloniki and Serres, with authorities seizing weapons and uncovering nearly half a million euros in stolen cash.

Authorities have issued arrest warrants for six suspects accused of blowing up multiple ATMs across northern Greece, in what police describe as a coordinated criminal operation that targeted cash machines in Thessaloniki and Serres.

According to investigators, the group — aged between 30 and 51 — is connected to at least 11 ATM explosions carried out between May 2020 and August 2021. Their total haul is estimated at around €500,000.

Police say the suspects operated using stolen vehicles and maintained bases in Thessaloniki and the nearby region of Kilkis. The ATMs they targeted were mostly located in suburban areas, allowing the group to strike quickly and escape before officers arrived.

A search of their hideouts uncovered a Kalashnikov rifle and two handguns, items authorities believe were used to support the criminal operation.

Two of the suspects were already serving prison sentences for unrelated offenses when the new charges were filed. The remaining four are currently being sought by police.
