A volunteer who cares for strays in the village of Kryoneri, close to Nafpaktos in western Greece, discovered a dog in a dire state after the animal returned from several days missing. The dog was found frightened, infested with maggots and suffering from sepsis. A veterinary examination revealed pellets in its hind leg consistent with a close-range gunshot.
The volunteer described the scene as traumatic and expressed anger at the cruelty, saying that someone who could shoot an animal in this way might do the same to people. Municipal officials in Nafpaktos and the local animal-welfare group have both reported the incident and urged an investigation. Locals voiced concern that this may not be an isolated act: there are suspicions of systematic poisoning or killing of animals in the area.
Veterinary teams treated the dog for infection and removed foreign material; the animal is now recovering and is expected to improve in the coming days. Authorities and rescue groups say they are monitoring the situation and hope the perpetrator will be identified and held accountable.
This case has sparked outrage among residents and animal-protection volunteers, who are calling for stronger enforcement and rapid investigation to prevent further cruelty in the community.
