Strong Winds Disrupt Transport and Public Services in Western Greece

The traffic police have imposed a ban on the circulation of motorcycles, caravans, and empty high-sided trucks on the Rio–Antirrio Bridge due to hazardous wind conditions.

Strong winds continued to batter parts of Western Greece for a second consecutive day, prompting the extension of emergency traffic measures on the Rio–Antirrio Bridge and the suspension of ferry services across the strait. Fire and police services have also been responding to numerous calls from residents reporting fallen trees and displaced objects.

According to an announcement by Gefyra S.A., traffic police have imposed a ban on the circulation of motorcycles, caravans, and empty high-sided trucks due to hazardous wind conditions. Passenger cars and loaded trucks are allowed to cross the bridge, but authorities stress that drivers must proceed with heightened caution, adjust their speed accordingly, avoid overtaking, and strictly follow police instructions.

On the Elefsina–Corinth–Patras–Pyrgos motorway, Olympia Odos has activated a heightened operational readiness plan. Five operational bases—in Megara, Kiato, Akrata, Rio, and Pyrgos—have been placed on full alert, with personnel and equipment ready for immediate intervention if required. Areas considered at higher risk of water accumulation are also being closely monitored.

The severe weather has led to widespread disruptions in public services. By decision of the regional governor, all schools across the Region of Western Greece remain closed today. In addition, the rector of the University of Patras has ordered the suspension of operations at university facilities in Rio, Koukouli, Messolonghi, and Agrinio.

Finally, the 6th Regional Health Authority announced that, for safety reasons, today’s emergency duty of the University Hospital of Patras in Rio will be transferred to Agios Andreas Hospital and will operate there until 3:00 p.m.
