The judicial examination of a case that stunned Greece on Epiphany Day, January 6, 2026, is entering its final phase. The victim was 17-year-old Angelos, who died following a violent assault in the city of Serres, in Northern Greece. The trial is scheduled to begin Wednesday before a three-judge juvenile court.
A 16-year-old defendant will stand trial, charged with intentional homicide committed in a calm mental state. He remains in pre-trial detention at a special juvenile detention facility in the city of Volos.
The Timeline of the Case
On the eve of Epiphany, a major Christian holiday celebrated in Greece on January 6, security camera footage captured the 16-year-old accused of the brutal beating walking toward Serres’ central square with two friends.
During his testimony before the investigating judge, the defendant admitted that he struck the victim with “two or three punches and one knee strike” following an argument that reportedly began over a girl.
According to the forensic report, the victim suffered extensive injuries across multiple parts of his body. Bruises were documented on his forehead, ears, around his eyes, lips, chest, hands, fingers, and lower limbs. Dried blood was also found around the nose area, while abrasions were identified on the jaw, neck, collarbone, chest, elbows, wrist, back, and waist.
Evidence contained in the case file, along with witness testimony, reportedly points to the conclusion that the 17-year-old largely adopted a defensive posture during the attack and offered little to no meaningful resistance.
