Three people were killed early Tuesday after two motorcycles collided on Alexandras Avenue in central Athens and were thrown into a parked car.
The crash occurred at about 1:30 a.m. at the intersection of Alexandras Avenue and Moustoxydi Street, near Vraila Street. The circumstances of the collision are under investigation.
According to preliminary police information, the two motorcycles collided at high speed before hitting the parked vehicle.
Three people killed
The three riders died instantly in the crash.
A 51-year-old man, born in 1975, was riding one of the motorcycles, which was traveling toward the Patisia neighborhood.
The second motorcycle was carrying two women, a 27-year-old born in 1999 and another woman whose identity has not yet been established.
Initial information indicates that one of the motorcycles was traveling on a side street and attempted to enter Alexandras Avenue in the uphill direction when it collided with the second motorcycle, which was already traveling along the avenue.
Police investigate cause of crash
Authorities are examining whether one of the two motorcycle riders may have run a red light. However, this remains an initial assessment, and it has not yet been established which motorcycle had the right of way.
Police are also investigating whether the victims were wearing protective helmets, as no helmets were found at the crash site.
Police officers and ambulances from Greece’s National Emergency Aid Center, known as EKAV, rushed to the scene and transported the victims to Red Cross Hospital in Athens. However, all three had already died.
