The supercomputer Deep Blue a chess-playing system developed by IBM. It took on reigning world champion Garry Kasparov and won the first game on this day even though Kasparov ended up winning the match 4-2. Nevertheless, Deep Blue defeated Kasparov in a rematch the following year.
