A tragic accident has left the city of Volos in shock after a 21-year-old student of the Department of Physical Education and Sport Science (TEFAA) in Athens fell to his death in the early hours of Tuesday.
The young man, identified as Iasonas, the only child of a well-known local businessman and a lawyer, was with friends on the rooftop of a four-story apartment building on Iolkos Street when the incident occurred.
According to local reports, the group had gathered for an impromptu late-night party, listening to music. Witnesses claim the students were throwing eggs at passersby, vehicles, and nearby shops, with remnants of shells and egg stains found around the area and on the rooftop.
Around 4 a.m., neighbors complained about the disturbance, and the group may have mistaken a shout from the street as coming from a police officer. Some began to leave via the stairs, but Iasonas attempted to climb onto an adjacent rooftop. To reach it, he stepped onto a plexiglass covering over the building’s lightwell. The panel gave way under his weight, and he fell several stories, landing fatally on the first floor.
Emergency responders rushed to the scene, but the 21-year-old suffered instant death from the fall. At Achillopouleio Hospital, devastated parents arrived to the news that their only child could not be saved.
Police have ruled out foul play but continue to investigate the exact circumstances of the accident. Testimonies from the friends who were with him at the time are expected to be crucial to the inquiry.
