A major safety incident unfolded early Friday when a truck was spotted travelling in the wrong direction on Greece’s main Athens–Thessaloniki motorway. According to the first information released by police, the truck entered the highway against the flow of traffic and continued for a significant distance between the Málgara toll station and the Kleidi junction, one of the busiest stretches of the national road network.

Officers managed to intercept the vehicle and bring it to a stop before it caused a collision. No injuries or damage were reported. The driver, a Bulgarian national, was immediately arrested and is facing charges of dangerous driving.

Authorities have yet to determine how the vehicle ended up in the opposite lane. An investigation is underway to clarify the circumstances and assess whether additional offences may have been committed.
