In celebration of its 80th anniversary, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has launched a new regional initiative to recognize the dedication, innovation, and leadership of young farmers across Europe and Central Asia.
The “FAO REU Recognition of Young Farmers in Europe and Central Asia” is welcoming applications from individuals and youth-led agricultural organizations working to build more sustainable, inclusive, and resilient food systems. The deadline to apply is August 12, 2025.
Organized by FAO’s Regional Office for Europe and Central Asia, the initiative focuses on highlighting the achievements of young farmers aged 18 to 35 who are nationals and residents of countries in the region. The recognition aims to promote agriculture as a viable and attractive career path for young people, especially women and marginalized groups.
Three Core Recognition Areas
Awards will be granted in three categories:
- Innovation in Agri-Food Systems: for individuals or organizations implementing innovative and sustainable practices, including those that integrate traditional knowledge.
- Community Development: honoring efforts that drive positive change in rural areas through community engagement, collaboration, and knowledge sharing.
- Inclusion and Empowerment: recognizing actions that advance gender equality, youth empowerment, and the inclusion of underrepresented or vulnerable groups in agriculture.
Who Can Apply
Eligible applicants include:
- Young farmers aged 18-35 from countries in Europe and Central Asia.
- Youth-led farmers’ organizations operating in the same region.
The FAO particularly encourages applications from young women farmers to ensure diverse representation and promote gender equality in the sector.
This new recognition is part of FAO’s broader commitment to supporting youth engagement in agriculture and ensuring that the next generation of farmers plays a leading role in shaping the future of food and farming.
Selected candidates will be notified of their recognition and asked to provide any necessary information from September 6 to 30.
