A wildfire that broke out late Wednesday night near the town of Farsala in central Greece is now reported to be under control, with firefighting efforts ongoing to tackle scattered hotspots in the mountainous terrain of Mount Kasidiaris.
The blaze began between 10:30 and 11:00 p.m. on July 9 in a remote and difficult-to-access area. Smoke from the fire was visible from the town of Farsala, raising early alarms among residents.
By Thursday morning, firefighting authorities reported that the fire had entered a phase of decline. Although flare-ups persist in certain pockets, the situation is now largely contained. Aerial firefighting efforts are still in progress, with helicopters and planes conducting water drops. The future course of the fire is expected to depend heavily on wind conditions throughout the day.
A total of 47 to 60 firefighters were deployed to the scene, supported by 3 to 4 specialized ground teams and 8 fire engines. An evacuation alert was also issued via Greece’s 112 emergency system for the nearby village of Dendrohori as a precaution.
Despite the scale of the response, no residential areas have been reported at risk, and the overall outlook remains positive. Fire crews continue to monitor and manage the affected zones to prevent any resurgence of flames.
