Greek authorities have issued a wildfire risk alert as fire weather conditions across the country are expected to deteriorate significantly between Sunday, July 13 and Sunday, July 20, according to meteo, the weather forecasting service.
High temperatures combined with low atmospheric humidity and strong northern winds are forecast to create hazardous conditions for wildfires. These so-called “Hot–Dry–Windy” conditions are especially concerning in eastern mainland Greece and the Aegean region from July 13 to July 16.
Wildfire Risk to Remain Elevated Nationwide
The prolonged presence of a warm air mass over Southeastern Europe is expected to dominate the region’s upper atmosphere, contributing to a sustained heatwave and dry spell. The resulting environment will increase flammability across Greece, making vegetation—especially dead or dry plants—highly susceptible to ignition, even overnight.
According to meteorological data, the weather pattern responsible for the increased fire risk is expected to persist at least until July 20. The combination of rising temperatures, dry air, and strong winds could significantly worsen conditions each day.
Monday, July 14: High Fire Risk in Several Regions
On Monday, July 14, wildfire risk will be particularly high, classified as Level 4 (Very High) in several parts of Greece. These include:
- Attica and Argolida
- Parts of Viotia, Corinthia, and Euboea
- Aegean islands such as Lesbos, Chios, Psara, Samos, and Ikaria
- Crete
Authorities urge residents and visitors in these areas to exercise caution and avoid any activities that could start a fire.
