Witnesses Describe Glyfada Patricide Outside Family Home

Eyewitness accounts detail a deadly knife attack by a 46-year-old man on his elderly father in a quiet Athens suburb, shedding light on the moments before and after the killing.

Eyewitnesses have described chilling moments surrounding the killing of an 80-year-old man who was fatally stabbed by his son outside their apartment building in the coastal Athens suburb of Glyfada, an incident that has shocked the local community.

According to witnesses, the attack unfolded shortly after 8 a.m., as the elderly man was leaving his home. A 46-year-old man allegedly lay in wait for his father at the building’s entrance and attacked him with a knife, repeatedly stabbing him in front of residents.

“He Was Crying for Help”

One eyewitness told local media that the victim could be heard screaming for help as the assault began. “I heard the father crying out, asking for help and begging to be saved,” the witness said, adding that the man had been preparing to go to church, as he did every Sunday.

Another witness reported hearing the victim’s final words, pleading with his son to stop the attack. Shortly afterward, the scene fell silent.

According to the same account, the suspect allegedly played religious music at high volume during the attack, apparently in an attempt to drown out his father’s screams.

Body Found in Car Trunk

Police were alerted by witnesses and arrived at the scene soon after. Officers later discovered the body of the 80-year-old man in the trunk of a car near the building, authorities said. The suspect was arrested at the scene, and the knife believed to have been used in the killing was found in his possession.

A History of Violence

Witness accounts and family sources also pointed to a disturbing history. Twelve years earlier, the same man had killed his mother in a similar knife attack inside the family home. He was later imprisoned in a psychiatric facility and eventually released under court-ordered conditions, including regular check-ins at a local police station and a requirement to live with his father.

A relative said the suspect was close to completing those conditions and was expected to make his final mandatory appearance at the police station in early February, after which he would have been fully free.

Threats After Arrest

Following his arrest, the suspect allegedly told police that he had killed both of his parents and threatened to kill his siblings as well, according to information cited by local media.

The investigation into the killing is ongoing, as authorities continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the attack and the enforcement of the suspect’s previous restrictions.
