Woman Injured Avoiding Wrong-Way Driver on Greek Highway

A 50-year-old woman says she “survived by a miracle” after swerving into a ditch to avoid an 89-year-old man who drove the wrong way for 10 kilometers on a major motorway

A serious road incident on northern Greece’s main east–west motorway left a 50-year-old woman injured after she took evasive action to avoid a head-on collision with an elderly driver traveling in the wrong direction.

According to authorities, an 89-year-old man drove his car against oncoming traffic for approximately 10 kilometers before the incident occurred. His erratic route was captured on video.

The woman, who suddenly encountered the vehicle in her lane, swerved instinctively to avoid a collision. Her car veered off the road and into a roadside ditch, leaving her with broken ribs. No direct collision took place between the two vehicles.

Speaking to local media, the woman described the moment as life-threatening and said she believes she survived “by a miracle.” She called on families to prevent elderly relatives who are no longer fit to drive from using cars and questioned the medical assessments that allow very elderly drivers to retain their licenses.

Police informed her that the elderly driver had been declared medically fit to drive about a year earlier. The case has now been referred to the justice system.

The woman said the incident has had a significant impact on her life, adding that she reacted purely on instinct. Police officers later told her that her maneuvers were the safest possible under the circumstances.
