A woman was fatally attacked by her husband in Greece’s northeastern Rodopi region on Wednesday, in another case of femicide in the country.
According to initial police information, the man attacked his wife with a knife shortly after 1 p.m., causing fatal injuries. Their eldest daughter called the police.
The couple, who were originally from Albania, had three children: two adults and one 16-year-old.
After the attack, the man injured himself with a knife in an apparent suicide attempt. He survived and was taken to a hospital, where he remains under police guard and is not considered to be in danger.
Previous domestic violence complaint
Police records show that the woman had previously reported her husband for domestic violence in 2022.
At the time, she filed a complaint for domestic threats against him in Heraklion, on the island of Crete. The man was arrested under Greece’s expedited arrest procedure and was brought before a prosecutor.
The circumstances surrounding Wednesday’s fatal attack remain under investigation.
