A yacht captain was arrested in the port of Agia Kyriaki in Trikeri, Pelion, after entering the harbor at high speed, causing strong waves that damaged four docked vessels. The incident occurred on Thursday, July 10, and resulted in material damage but no injuries or environmental harm.
According to port authorities, the vessel’s approach generated waves that caused four moored boats to collide with each other, leading to notable damage. The incident prompted an investigation by the Agia Kyriaki Port Authority, a division of the Central Port Authority of Volos. As part of the procedure, all four boats were prohibited from sailing until they could present seaworthiness certificates issued by certified inspectors.
Initial reports mistakenly linked the yacht to Portuguese football star Cristiano Ronaldo. However, Greece’s Ministry of Shipping later clarified that the vessel belongs to a Greek-Australian businessman. The confusion stemmed from the captain’s nickname, “Ronaldo,” rather than any actual connection to the athlete.
The captain was taken into custody on Friday and is facing charges for endangering maritime safety under Article 291 of the Greek Penal Code.
