A 56-year-old yoga instructor in Greece has been remanded in custody after appearing before an investigating judge over a series of alleged car firebombings targeting friends and relatives, authorities said.
The woman, who denies all accusations, was sent to a psychiatric unit within a prison facility following her testimony, after both the judge and prosecutor found her explanations unconvincing, according to information from the case.
Prosecutors accuse the yoga teacher of carrying out three attacks within 12 days, allegedly placing improvised incendiary devices on the cars of people from her social and family circle as acts of revenge. The incidents reportedly took place in several suburbs of the Athens metropolitan area.
Police say the devices consisted of small gas canisters combined with gasoline and cloth, forming makeshift firebombs.
Denials and alibi claims
During her testimony, the 56-year-old denied any involvement in the attacks and claimed she had been unfairly targeted by people close to her for years. She told the judge that she did not have a permanent residence before her arrest and had been staying temporarily in hotels in different parts of the Attica region.
She also argued that she was in other areas at the times when the arson attacks occurred.
Request for psychiatric evaluation
The suspect referred to personal difficulties in her statement, including a long period without contact with her son. She also said she had personally requested a psychiatric evaluation.
Despite these claims, judicial authorities ordered her pre-trial detention. She has since been transferred to the psychiatric clinic of Korydallos prison, where she will remain while the investigation continues.
