Giannis Antetokounmpo Begins a New Era in Miami

Giannis Antetokounmpo begins a new NBA chapter in Miami, leaving behind No. 34 for a fresh start in the Heat’s quest for another title.

The Miami Heat and South Florida will mark the next chapter in the career and life of NBA star Giannis Antetokounmpo.

After a legendary run with the Milwaukee Bucks, the Greek superstar has bid farewell to Wisconsin and is heading to the NBA’s southeastern outpost in pursuit of a second championship ring. For Miami, the move represents a bid for a fourth NBA title—and the franchise’s first since the LeBron James and Dwyane Wade era culminated in the 2013 championship.

Antetokounmpo is also embracing a complete fresh start by making a symbolic change to one of the most recognizable aspects of his identity: his jersey number.

The iconic No. 34, which Antetokounmpo  wore throughout his time with the Bucks and with the Greece men’s national basketball team, appears set to become a thing of the past.

In a video shared by the Heat on social media, the first glimpse of the Greek Freak in Miami suggests fans will soon have to get used to seeing him wear No. 7 instead.

The number is currently held by Ryan Conwell, but it is widely expected that he will relinquish it, allowing Antetokounmpo’s Miami era to begin with a new—and potentially iconic—number.
