Tensions flared at the port of Piraeus, Athens on Saturday when passengers bound for Naxos blocked the ferry’s ramp, delaying its departure by an hour. The travelers had been scheduled to leave on Friday, but their trip was postponed due to a mass sailing ban on account of dangerous gale-force winds.
After being told by the ferry company they could depart on Saturday, the passengers arrived early in the morning only to learn they would not be allowed to board.
Shortly after 6:45 a.m., more than 100 passengers carrying tickets dated for Friday gathered at the port gate. Despite prior assurances from the ferry operator that they could travel on Saturday’s departure, crew members informed them at the dock that they would not be sailing.
Frustrated, some passengers stood on the vessel’s loading ramp in protest. It took roughly an hour of negotiations with Coast Guard officials before they agreed to leave the area. Passengers then contacted ferry companies seeking clarity on when they would be able to travel.
“We have paid, we are fully legitimate, we have our cars, our tickets, and we’ve spent a lot on accommodation that’s now up in the air — what are we supposed to do?” one passenger told Greece’s national broadcaster ERT.
Another passenger added: “We come here and not only are we told to leave, but when we ask, they say the tickets can’t be changed. This is unacceptable.”
